Welcome to our phonics page!
Reading is a fundamental skill that children learn from a very early age and the reading journey starts with Phonics. Phonics is a process in which children learn to read and write by blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation. At Ludlow Primary School we follow the Read Write Inc Phonics Programme.
All children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 have access to a daily phonics session lasting 45 minutes which is targeted at their level. Alongside these Phonics sessions, children are exposed to a wide range of phonically decodable books which include the sounds the children are learning. They are encouraged to read these texts, develop confidence and fluency aiding their comprehension skills.

Reading in paramount in supporting children with their writing as it enable children to be imursed in rich language which can then be tranferred into their writing at a later date. We promote reading for pleasure at Ludlow Primary School and encourage the children to have a love and passion for reading and want to share these with their peers.
Alongside their phonically decodable book, children will also bring home 'books to share' these may be above their reading ability but will expose them to new, unfamiliar language which they add to their repertoire. We encourage the children to share these book with adults at home and ask you to share your love of books with your children. They should know that adults are readers too.
